MLB: Wednesday's plays

Play: New York/Philadelphia under 8.5 -110 (Colon vs. Eickhoff)

Time: 7:05 p.m. ET

Reasoning: Jerad Eickhoff pitched six scoreless innings in his major-league debut last Friday. Bartolo Colon has won both of his starts against the Phillies this season and is 6-3 lifetime against them. Colon also has pitched well against Ryan Howard (4-for-19 lifetime). The Mets are hitting .239 against RH and Philadelphia is hitting .248 vs. righties. New York relievers have a 2.21 ERA in their last five.

Play: San Diego +1.5 -160 (Ross vs. Gonzalez)

Time: 7:05 p.m. ET

Reasoning: The Padres would be 77-48 if they were given 1.5 rpg. Washington would be 45-79 if it gave 1.5 rpg. I like San Diego, which has won nine of its last 13, to do some damage vs. Gio Gonzalez. Against southpaws the Padres are hitting .307 and are scoring 6.00 rpg in their last 10 and are hitting .450 and are scoring 12.27 rpg in their last five. Gonzalez has a 3.98 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP overall and a 5.74 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP in his last three starts. Against Gonzalez, Derek Norris has two homers in three career at-bats and Justin Upton is 5-for-16 lifetime (three homers). Tyson Ross has a 3.00 ERA in his last three turns. He is 5-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 15 road starts and he beat Washington on May 14 (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R). Nationals relievers have been a little better on the season, but San Diego has had the advantage over the last 10 games.
